SYCAMORE FARM RED BARN PLANS

FOR 2008 HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE

“CELEBRATE CRAFTMANSHIP”

Plans are set for the second annual “Celebrate Craftsmanship” Christmas Open House in the restored Red Barn, a century and a half-year-old, three-story, post-and-beam structure anchoring the farmstead known as Sycamore Farm at 5001 E. Poplar St., Terre Haute, Ind.  “Celebrate Craftsmanship – A Christmas Gathering at the Barn” will take place November 29, 2008.  Doors will open at 9 a.m. and admission is free.

           Visiting Midwestern artisans, several honored in Early American Life Magazine (EAL), will be exhibiting their American-made crafts, including Shaker furniture, framed wax portraits and theorems, textiles, and handcrafted jewelry.  Antiques, folk art, and gourmet food will be available throughout the festively decorated rooms that once housed livestock, grain, and farm implements.

Artists scheduled to date include:

·        Gretchen Kraut and Annie Gauer, lampwork jewelry;

·        Donna Weaver, wax portraits (EAL artist);

·        Charlie Sweitzer, Shaker furniture;

·        Marilyn Oehler, hooked rugs and Russian needlepunch (EAL artist);

·        Peggy Taylor, hand-dyed yarns and handwovens (EAL artist);

·        Tom Wintczak, redware and sgraffito pottery; and

·        Widow’s Dowry Antiques.

Once the center of farm activity, the mid-nineteenth century Yankee barn had been vacant for over a decade, sheltering only a few castoffs and several families of raccoons.  Cracked beams, paint worn boards, and crumbling foundation stones marked the effects of years of disuse.  Phase 1 of the restoration was initiated by lifting the entire barn off its limestone rock foundation and replacing the rock with a new poured foundation.  Other renovations included concrete floors, beam replacements where necessary (using only reclaimed Indiana barn beams), new windows, a restroom addition, heating and air conditioning, a native sassafras hardwood floor, and lighting.

The Barn is part of the Sycamore Farm complex that includes a four-room bed & breakfast inn, and full service restaurant called ButtonWoods.  Sycamore Farm is located at 5001 E. Poplar in Terre Haute, Ind..  Reservations are taken for lunch, dinner, overnight stays, and special events.
